➤ The sustainable main material: banana fiber

Banana fiber is a natural, untreated plant fiber that feels wonderfully natural. This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fibrous bark separates from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried in the sun for about a week, naturally developing its intense brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands, which are then processed by our production partners in Java into traditional basketry.

This wall art is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasize fair pay, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all skilled craftspeople of legal age. Older people, who can no longer work in agriculture, particularly benefit from jobs in the craft sector, allowing them to use the skills they learned from a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They've often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful through this work and earn a good income. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished wall art

For our wall art, the experienced craftspeople at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java weave banana fibers with great patience and skill into a hand-formed frame of thin iron rods. This ensures that they retain their stable, round shape. The delicate star pattern of white cotton is then embroidered with a needle. In total, making a wall art takes approximately two hours.
