➤ The sustainable main material: water hyacinth

Water hyacinth is a tropical plant that thrives in lakes and rivers. Originating in South America, it has spread throughout Southeast Asia, where it is considered an invasive weed. Its rapid growth forms dense mats on the water's surface, blocking light and reducing oxygen levels, which threatens aquatic life. To mitigate this, the plants are regularly removed. After harvesting, the leaves are trimmed, and the sturdy stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. This process results in a highly sustainable and abundant raw material, perfect for making our handmade woven products.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished rug

Our Sawah Taps are made by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Java. The dried water hyacinth fibers, a purely natural product, are processed into a robust and beautifully shaped rug. Each fiber is hand-woven to create a harmonious pattern. The rug remains 100% natural without any further processing or artificial additives. It takes approximately three hours to produce a rug.
