Main material: Water hyacinth
Our trays are made of plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully of nature.
The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows in rivers and lakes. It is originally native to South America but was also introduced to Southeast Asia. There, it is considered a weed because it multiplies incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all aquatic life to die. Therefore, the plants must be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material that is readily available here at Soeji for many woven goods!

When selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. Only mature and experienced artisans work at the companies where we source our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates minimal greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
